Continuing Education

Initial VALWOOD Christian Coaching Certification is valid for one year. In order to maintain your certification you will need to complete 10 hours of continuing education each certificate year, beginning with the receipt of your certificate.
We offer several ways to accomplish this:
- One-day skills course on-site at Hollifield Leadership Center (8 hours **Combine this option with two 1-hour teleclasses.)
- Continuing Ed Webinars (1 hour each) * See schedule below
- Advanced Classes such as A Coach Approach to Evangelism and Discipleship, Coaching Teams, Coaching Change, Personal Coaching, Transition, and Transformation, Coaching as a Learning Catalyst, Persoal Coaching, and The Language of Coaching (16 hours - you may spread these hours over two years with 2 webinars each year to reach the 10 hour requirement) *See schedule below.
- Audit Foundations of Christian Leadership Coaching (16 hours - you may spread these hours over two years with 2 webinars each year to reach the 10 hour requirement)
- For those who live out-of-state, we allow you to transfer in 5 hours of non-Valwood credits. Forms and additional information available from Kim Duncan.
- We now have Coaching Feedback Sessions available. These telephone sessions are one hour long and are worth one hour of continuing education credit. For a full description of this learning experience and a registration form contact Kim Duncan.

Advanced Courses
A Coach Approach to Evangelism and Discipleship
This learning experience will focus on understanding how coaching impacts our attitude, approach, and expectations for evangelizing and disciple-making. Participants will develop personalized definitions for evangelism and discipleship and deepen their commitment to these Christian practices.
Class includes:
- The art of dialogue as useful for coaching faith movement
- Understanding faith development in terms of shifts in belief and behavior as well as in terms of assent, fidelity, and trust
- Exploring forgiveness, grace, and mercy as key coaching concepts

Coaching Teams
Much of the work that we do within organizations and churches is with teams of people. Coaches use the same foundational skills to coach individuals and teams but if you've ever tried to coach a team of people, you know that it is much more complex than coaching an individual.
Class includes:
- Guidance that scripture gives us about teams and coaching teams
- Coaching groups to become teams
- Coaching teams to become more effective teams
- Assessing the dysfunctions of a team (using The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni)
- Plenty of skills practice and case study work

The Language of Coaching
This learning experience introduces the concepts of metaphor, storytelling, and formulas to promote discovery. Participants will learn to recognize distinctions, yellow flag words, and how to synthesize the other person's words for the benefit of the other person.

Using Instruments, Assessments in Coaching
This course provides students an overview of various assessments, inventories, and tools for creating awareness with coaching clients. Among the instruments addressed will be the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), the Leadership Practices Inventory 360 (LPI 360), StrengthsFinder 2.0, and DiSC. Attention will be given to discerning which instruments are most useful in which client situations, what steps are necessary for utilizing various instruments, and how to promote effective client engagement with instruments.
